Cathedral invites congregations & choirs to join in "Memorials to the Lost"

All who are concerned about the epidemic of gun violence in our country are invited to join hands with the Cathedral of Trinity and St. Philip’s in hosting the powerful Memorials to the Lost enactment. This publicly visible statement will take the form of T-shirts, each bearing the name of one lost to gun violence, hung along the Cathedral’s iron fence on Broad Street, in Newark.

This effort of awareness will culminate on Sunday, December 13, at 3 PM in a Service of Lessons and Carols in which traditional Advent lessons will combine with contemporary readings on the impact of violence. December 13 is the eve of the third anniversary of the mass shooting in Newtown, CT.

The Cathedral Choir and the collaborating St. Paul’s Choir School will offer music of hope and healing, and welcome singers of all ages from throughout the diocese to be part of this meaningful service (see more below). Bryan Miller, the originator of Memorials to the Lost, will be the featured speaker, and will be joined by local officials in law enforcement and corrections in solidarity with the message of heightened awareness.

Congregations and other organizations are invited to send the name(s) of those who have died by gun violence to the Rev. Willi Smith (rector@trinitycliffsidepark.org), Rector of Trinity Church, Cliffside Park, who serves on Cathedral Chapter and will be coordinating the T-shirt effort.

The public statement through this enactment is one of being present “in the world, but not of it.” The service is to be a time of commemoration, healing and hope on Gaudete Sunday in the season of Advent.

Singers invited to participate with Cathedral Choir

Singers from throughout the diocese are invited to become part of the meaningful Memorials to the Lost commemoration at Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral on Sunday, December 13.

There are two ways interested singers can participate:

  1. With just one rehearsal, on Saturday, December 12, singers who have learned a few relatively easy musical selections in advance, can participate.

  2. For a more in-depth musical experience, including the vocal training provided by the Cathedral’s Director of Arts Ministries, Dr. Deborah Simpkin King, singers who read music can sing all of the music in the event by attending the rehearsal schedule listed below. NOTE: These rehearsals are placed in such a way as to not conflict with most ongoing individual parish choir rehearsals.

Please register your interest here: http://goo.gl/forms/9VkiRG1Afb

Music Directors interested in working collaboratively with Dr. King, or in sending singers to this event, are asked to communicate that information here: http://goo.gl/forms/9VkiRG1Afb; and/or, feel free to reach out to her directly at Cathedral@DeborahSKing.com.

The choir call on December 13 for the 3 PM service is 1 PM.
