[The Record] Memory, unity and hope – those were the themes of a vigil held here Saturday to honor the 49 victims of the massacre in Orlando.

About 60 people gathered under a clear sky in Huyler Park for the event, sponsored by the Tenafly Interfaith Association. They prayed for those who lost their lives in the mass shooting at a gay nightclub and to call for society to move forward in love and unity.

The vigil’s speakers – mostly members of various religious communities – also led a moment of silence after reading the victims’ names.

“Remembrance includes keeping in mind the times in our history when we forgot who we are as Americans and reacted to crises out of fear and prejudice,” said Rev. Lynne Bleich Weber of the Church of the Atonement in the borough. “Now we work together to make sure that we do not repeat those mistakes. We look for positive ways to help, to make our country better and safer, while remaining true to our American values of freedom, diversity and inclusion.”
