Death in our diocesan family: Barbara Howe Lewis

Barbara Howe Lewis, 72, of Montclair, wife of the Rev. Walter E. Lewis, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, August 5, after a 10-year battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 29 at 11 AM at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Upper Montclair.

Mrs. Lewis was born in Brooklyn, New York. She received a B.A. degree from Mary Washington College and subsequently became a first grade teacher. In 1964, she married the Rev. Dr. Walter E. Lewis at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. After eight years in southern Maryland, they moved to Montclair in 1972, where they reared their family. Mrs. Lewis was a vibrant member of the Montclair area, working as a successful realtor for over 30 years. She was also active in the Episcopal Church of St. James’ in Upper Montclair, where she helped found the Junior Guild of Women. She was recently honored by the Diocese of Newark with the David C. Hegg Lifetime Achievement Award for her many years of service to the church.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by her beloved husband, Walter, to whom she was married for 51 years; their three children, Elisabeth (Miller), Mark and Andrew; and their spouses, C.J. Miller, Christine and Tara; and ten grandchildren. One of her greatest joys was vacationing with the entire family on Martha’s Vineyard and other locations.
