There is no limit to the number of guests that a confirmand1 may invite.
PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON NEW STREET (off Broad St., across the street from the Cathedral). There is little pedestrian traffic in this area. Discounted parking vouchers for MILITARY PARK PARKING GARAGE (across the street from NJPAC) will be provided per request upon entry to the Cathedral.
Confirmands need to be at the Cathedral 45 minutes prior to the start of the service as there will be a rehearsal to review the logistics of the service.
Confirmands (with clergy) will be seated in reserved pews by church. Sponsors, parents, family members and friends may sit in any non-reserved pews, usually on the sides or up in the balcony.
The Bishop will ask each person being confirmed, received or reaffirmed the name (first or first and middle) to be spoken during the rite. Per the Bishop’s request, NAME CARDS ARE NO LONGER BEING USED. As each candidate approaches the Bishop and kneels, he/she will tell him his/her name and the rite to be pronounced. For example (“I am Catherine Marie and I wish to be confirmed” or “My name is Richard, and I wish to be received”). Family and friends stand in place in the pews as their confirmand is blessed.
PLEASE, do not use flash photography during the service. Non-flash photos may be taken. The balcony offers a wonderful view. The Bishop will take a GROUP photo with the confirmands per church outside of the Cathedral, (weather permitting) immediately following the Confirmation service. Congregations should try to keep the confirmands together after the service to facilitate picture taking. Families and friends should have their cameras ready as neither the Diocese nor the Cathedral supply photographers. Time for photos is limited and does not allow for individual photos with the Bishop.
There is a portable ramp that will be in place at the front door of the Cathedral. Anyone with limited mobility or in a wheelchair should pull up in front of the Cathedral to unload. Anyone with limited mobility or in a wheelchair or cart who wishes to take Communion but cannot come to the front of the church to take it, should ask an usher to request Communion be brought to his/her seat.
The Confirmation service usually lasts between 1 ½ and 2 hours, depending upon the number of people being confirmed.
Neither the Diocese nor the Cathedral hosts a reception following the Confirmation service. If you and your guests are interested in dining opportunities in downtown Newark, use this link to explore your options: http://www.downtownnewark.com/Portal/Dining
