Becoming ambassadors

Becoming ambassadors

“This public, community forming, and restoring dimension of the Spirit’s work is vital for the Episcopal Church to recover in order to live into its ideals for diversity and reconciliation.” (Page 70, People of the Way by Dwight Zscheile.)

In other words, the Spirit draws people together – from various backgrounds, races and socioeconomic realities.

In becoming more aware of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, Dwight Zscheile suggests that we need to become “ambassadors.” It is an intriguing metaphor. An ambassador is one who stays connected. In the context of the church, an ambassador is one connected to the mysteries of what is done in church – and is also connected to the dynamics of what is going on in the community.

This requires an open heart and an open mind – and a willingness to listen. Listening to the Spirit, as it brings us together in the ancient and sacred mysteries – but also listening to the concerns, hopes and fears of what is happening in the local neighborhood or community. A discipline of listening provides an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to bring people together.
